Log with a woodpecker chamber exposed

I found this piece of fallen tree trunk in a forest in the Bull Hills, Hungary yesterday. The rotten tree had snapped off at a weak spot, where a woodpecker had excavated its nesting cavity. Given the location and dimensions of the cavity it is almost certainly an old nest of White-backed Woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos (Gerard Gorman).

Food store of Steppe Mouse

A food storage mound of Steppe Mouse Mus spicilegus. This one was around 1 metre across at the base and had been there for some time as weeds had grown up through it. Photo taken near Bogacs, Hungary, October 2014, by Gerard Gorman.
